According to reports from a Spanish state-owned TV station, citing local firefighters, the crash took place in the municipality of Cernadilla. The BBC has confirmed, after speaking with the Guardia Civil, that both Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother, 26, lost their lives in the incident.

Details emerging from the scene indicate that the brothers were traveling in a Lamborghini when the car veered off the road due to a tire blowout while overtaking another vehicle. The car subsequently caught fire, and both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Diogo Jota was a rising star in world football, known for his dynamic play and crucial goals for Liverpool since joining the club in 2020 for over £40 million from Wolverhampton Wanderers. During his time at Liverpool, he helped the club secure three major trophies, including a recent Premier League title.

Jota was also a key player for the Portuguese national team, earning 49 caps and winning the UEFA Nations League twice, most recently just a few weeks ago. His younger brother, André Filipe, was also a footballer, although he had not reached the same heights as Diogo.

The accident occurred on the A52, a major road running through Zamora province. Reports indicate that the crash happened near the small town of Palacios de Sanabria.

Just weeks before the tragedy, Diogo Jota had celebrated his marriage, sharing his happiness with fans on social media. The news of his sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the football community, with tributes expected to pour in from teammates, fans, and clubs worldwide.

Liverpool Football Club and the Portuguese Football Federation are yet to release official statements, but the loss of such a talented and beloved player will undoubtedly be deeply felt by all who knew him, both on and off the pitch.
