The Death of Chadwick Boseman Sheds Light on Racial Disparities in Colon Cancer
LOS ANGELES — The untimely death of actor Chadwick Boseman at age 43 has sparked a nationwide conversation about the racial disparities in colon cancer, a disease that disproportionately affects and kills Black Americans—particularly those under 50.

Boseman, best known for his iconic role as T’Challa in “Black Panther,” lost his private battle with colon cancer in 2020. His passing left fans and fellow actors in shock. “Why him? Why not me?” wondered many, as the tragedy underscored a harsh reality: colon cancer is more prevalent and deadlier for Black Americans than for their white counterparts.
According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer rates among Black Americans are about 20% higher than among whites. Even more alarming, the death rate from the disease is 40% higher in Black communities. Dr. Daniel Trees, who treats patients at Mount Sinai Hospital, explained, “The racial disparity in treatment and survival outcomes goes across the entire spectrum. Black patients are less likely to receive timely screenings and adequate treatment, which leads to poorer outcomes.”
CBS News contributor and colon cancer survivor, whose diagnosis came in his 30s after months of symptoms, shared his experience: “I thought I was healthy. If my wife hadn’t basically ordered me to get a colonoscopy, I would not be right here right now.” His story is a reminder that early detection can save lives, yet many are unaware or unable to access the care they need.
Medical organizations are now recommending that African Americans begin colorectal screenings at age 45, rather than the standard age of 50, due to the higher risk. But the problem is growing among even younger adults. “Over the last decade, we’ve seen a rising number of cases in people under 50,” said Dr. Trees. “If you’re young and you have symptoms like bleeding or unexplained changes in bowel habits, don’t ignore it. Go to your doctor and get tested.”
Experts say the issue is about more than just medical advice—it’s about trust and access. “If you have a negative relationship with medical providers because you’ve been subjected to racism or haven’t been listened to, you’re going to be less likely to go to the doctor,” said a health advocate. This mistrust, combined with systemic inequalities in healthcare, means Black Americans are often diagnosed at later stages, when the disease is harder to treat.
The movement for Black lives extends beyond police violence, activists say. “Black Lives Matter isn’t just about police brutality. It’s also about racial health disparities,” said Drian Juarez, a Los Angeles-based advocate. “We have to address these gaps if we want to save lives.”
For survivors, every milestone is meaningful. One survivor marked the second anniversary of being declared cancer free on the very day Chadwick Boseman died. “It was bittersweet. I survived, but we lost a hero who inspired millions.”
As Boseman’s legacy continues to inspire, his death is a call to action: to close the racial gap in healthcare, increase awareness, and encourage early screening—so that more lives can be saved.
